New York public lands need YOU!

Do you have a favorite state park, campground, or greenway trail?

It’s time to give back! New York’s public lands depend on the generosity of volunteers to remain open, welcoming, and protected for all to enjoy–now and for future generations. That’s why PTNY, along with our partners at the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation, Canal Corporation, and Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, created our Love Our New York Lands stewardship events.

Building off the principles of the Love Our New York Lands campaign, this slate of events provides opportunities throughout the year for New Yorkers volunteer at their favorite sites across the state.

The series kicked off in April with the Canal Clean Sweep, followed by I Love My Park Day in May. This past weekend, we celebrated the inaugural Adirondack and Catskill Park Day and next up is Fish and Wildlife Day on Saturday, September 28.

Adirondack and Catskill Park Day (September 7, 2024)

The inaugural Adirondack and Catskill Park Day focused on the conservation of land that makes up over 6.5 million acres within New York. Volunteers helped with trail maintenance and perennial plantings in the Forest Preserve and participated in campground cleanups.

Though the weather was a bit rainy, that didn’t stop dozens of volunteers from showing up and getting their hands dirty at 8 different events across the Adirondack and Catskill Parks!

At Kaaterskill Falls, where PTNY Executive Director Paul Steely White volunteered, participants cleaned up the trails while learning about Leave No Trace principles from the Catskill Center Stewards.

UPCOMING: Fish and Wildlife Day (September 28, 2024):

There is still one more opportunity to volunteer this Fall!

Coinciding with National Hunting and Fishing Day, Fish and Wildlife Day on Saturday, September 28, is a great opportunity to show your appreciation for wildlife and conservation. Volunteer to plant native species and remove invasives to foster a healthy wildlife habitat at a Wildlife Management Area near you. Or learn how to build a bird or bat house that will benefit the species at a State Park or State Forest. At the end of the day, unwind with a birding excursion or nature walk and appreciate the importance of wildlife conservation!

And did we mention DEC has designated September 28 as a Free Fishing Day?? You heard that right! Show your support for our public lands and stick around to catch a fish (or two).

Our state public lands are shared by all New Yorkers–our families, and our neighbors–and we all need to do our part to take care of them. Thank you for helping to ensure these beneficial and treasured places stay protected for years to come!
