Mexico Point improves park accessibility

Mexico Point State Park is taking big steps to improve accessibility. Thanks to a $30,592 grant from the Park and Trail Partnership Grant program, the park can now welcome more visitors than ever.

The new limestone-hardened accessible pathway will allow wheelchairs, walkers, and baby carriages to easily traverse the park. The handicapped-accessbile path connects the parking lot, restrooms, pavilion, and lakeshore with easy access to benches.

The Friends of Mexico Point Park held a ribbon cutting ceremony in June to celebrate this partnership with NYS Parks.

The funding also went to living and natural history interpretive signage, detailing information about the native plants and animals in addition to the park’s rich history and involvement in the Revolutionary War.

The trail leads to a new butterfly garden, designed and created by Terry Clarcq. The raised-bed garden is home to a variety of flowers used to attract butterflies.

The Park and Trail Partnership Grant program focuses on the preservation, stewardship, interpretation, maintenance and promotion of New York State parks, trails, state historic sites and public lands. This funding promotes tourism, economic development, and outdoor recreation through the growth and expansion of a connected statewide network of parks, trails, greenways and public lands.
