PTNY Seeking Qualified Consultant to Help Bring Interactive Maps to the Next Level

Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) seeks professional services to develop a detailed scope, work plan and cost estimate to outline what would be required to relaunch PTNY’s online interactive maps with a new user interface using ArcGIS Online or similar software. The selected consultant will be able to help PTNY understand how to bring its vision of high-quality, consistent, and attractive interactive maps that can be easily updated to reality.

PTNY is New York’s leading statewide advocate for parks and trails, dedicated since 1985 to improving our health, economy, and quality of life through the use and enjoyment of green space. These professional services will support Parks & Trails New York’s (PTNY) mission to expand, protect and promote a network of parks, trails, and open spaces throughout our state for use and enjoyment by all by making it easier for current and future trail users to plan trips on our state’s extensive network of greenway trails.

PTNY seeks to accomplish this mission by relaunching its interactive maps with a modern interface, enhanced functionality, and improved back-end for ease of managing features. The primary maps to be updated and relaunched include the Cycle the Erie Canal map and the Trailfinder map. An additional objective of this project is for PTNY to be able to create “focus maps” using the datasets to showcase specific elements (i.e. only camping) or specific locations (i.e. one community).

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS (updated 12/1/23)

Q: Are there any datasets available that could be used to help paint a clear picture of the mapping possibilities?
A: Yes. Please contact Erica Schneider at eschneider@ptny.org if you are interested in receiving these files.

Q: What does EB and WB mean in the phrase “One-way routing (for segments that are routed differently e.g. EB vs. WB – primarily on-road)"?
A: Eastbound and Westbound. This will usually happen when there are one-way roads that restrict travel, thus making the route two parallel segments.

Q: Could you offer some clarification on how you’re imagining offline capabilities to work?
A:I don't think we have fully flushed it out yet. I think we are envisioning a map with routing that would work even when there is no cell service. I'm not sure if this capability would be limited to an app, but even if that's the case, it would be good to know.

Q: Will the selected consultant be provided access to the current mapping/GIS systems used by PTNY for existing online maps to review their processes and efficiencies?
A: Yes, the selected consultant will be provided access to our current mapping/GIS systems.
