Celebrate Black History Month at NYS Parks and Sites

The Association for the Study of African American Life and History initiated Black History Month, formerly known as “Negro History Week,” in 1926 but the week soon expanded into a month of observances. During the month of February, we celebrate and honor the prominent events and figures of African American history. New York State parks and historic sites join in the celebration with numerous events and exhibitions.

• Cultural exhibits that feature works from black artists, with posters and prints for sale, will take place on Long Island. Exhibits locations include the Long Island Parks Regional Headquarters in Babylon, Jones Beach State Park and Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park.

• John Jay Homestead State Historic Park will feature a Thematic Tour, “Slavery & Abolition,” which explores the history of the Jay family and its slaves. This event requires advanced purchase of tickets.

• At John Brown State Historic Site, near Lake Placid, visitors can take a guided tour of this National Historic Landmark. John Brown’s home was considered a key stop on the Underground Railroad.

• The Battle of Saratoga, considered the turning point in the Revolutionary War, took place at what is now known as Saratoga National Historical Park. Tour the battlegrounds or bring your bike and ride along the multi-use path to learn more about the vital role African Americans played in this victory.

• The home of Harriet Tubman, one of the most well-known Underground Railroad “conductors,” is located in Auburn, NY at the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park. Here, visitors will learn more about Tubman’s role in American black history and women’s rights.

• NYC park-goers may want to visit Shirley Chisholm State Park. This new state park in Brooklyn was named for the first black congresswoman and first woman and black politician to ever run for president in the United States.

As it’s a leap year, Black History Month will last 29 days this year so you have more time to celebrate the impact African Americans have had on our history.
